Broadly speaking my work negotiates the post industrial militarization of culture, and the looming certainty of the mechanised accident, notions of displacement, reparation and debt, and institutional restructures and failures in the (predominantly) painted form. My writing negotiates the thorny situation of the individual (and the artist) in these precarious states.
Emma Smith was born in Auckland, New Zealand in 1975. Smith has an MFA from Elam University of Auckland, 2005. She has exhibited in extensively in New Zealand and in London. Smith’s recent achievements include The Taipei Artist Village residency Programme 2014, Molly Morpeth Judges Award 2015 & Parkin Drawing Award Merit 2015. Smith currently teaches Contemporary Arts at Unitec Institute of Technology, Auckland.
